'The Five Obstructions'- Jorgen Leth and Lars von Trier

In this film, co-directed by Jorgen Leth and Lars von Trier, Leth's 1967 film 'The Perfect Human' is re-made five times. It is a documentary which tracks Leth's progress and the relationship between the two filmmakers.

On each occasion von Trier issued 'obstructions', constraints on Leth, requiring him to find creative solutions to communicate the same ideas he expressed in the original film or embellish on them (e.g. in the first of the five re-makes Leth has to answer the questions he asked in the original film).

Working around the 'obstructions' clearly makes Leth uncomfortable at times, most notably during his second re-make when he is required to film in the 'worst place in the world' however in the end he seems to acknowledge that the 'obstructions' did not hinder his filmmaking and the films are successful.
